The<\/em> term \u201calt-right\u201d is toxic. It should be. The loose confederation <\/span><\/a>of neo-Nazis, white nationalists, and misogynists have spent the last year spreading fear, hatred, and conspiracy theories.<\/p>\n

The problem for conservatives is that the movement is directly connected to the major right-wing news outlet Breitbart.com; its former executive chairman, Stephen Bannon; and Bannon\u2019s new boss, President Donald Trump.<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cThe de facto merger between Breitbart and the Trump Campaign represents a landmark achievement for the \u2018Alt-Right,\u2019\u201d Hillary Clinton said last year<\/span><\/a> after Bannon was hired by the Trump campaign, highlighting the website\u2019s promotion of \u201crace-baiting ideas, anti-Muslim and anti-immigrant ideas, anti-woman [ideas].\u201d \u201cA fringe element has effectively taken over the Republican Party,\u201d she added.<\/em><\/p>\n

That \u201cfringe element\u201d is now in the White House. But direct association with racists and misogynists isn\u2019t great for the conservative movement\u2019s brand — or Breitbart\u2019s bottom line. So the organizers of this week\u2019s annual Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) are working hard to redefine the term \u201calt-right\u201d in order to retroactively separate that movement from the White House and the website.<\/em><\/p>\n

In cable news interviews and speeches from the conference lectern, CPAC\u2019s organizers have condemned the \u201calt-right\u201d — even having security very publicly remove<\/span><\/a> from the premises Richard Spencer<\/span><\/a>, the white nationalist who originally coined the term.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Try as CPAC\u00a0 might smart folks\u00a0will see through the smoke and mirrors and the white wash. In other words if it\u00a0has heretofore\u00a0walked like a duck and quacked like a duck\u00a0it is almost a certainty that it remains a duck.<\/p>\n

Bannon himself described<\/span><\/a> Breitbart last year as \u201cthe platform for the alt-right,\u201d and he led the website<\/span><\/a> in an anti-immigrant, anti-Muslim, misogynistic, ethno-nationalist direction that appealed to that movement. He hired<\/span><\/a> Milo Yiannopoulos and had no apparent problem<\/span><\/a> with the despicable commentary and activism he wrought — or the way he championed<\/span><\/a> the \u201calt-right.\u201d<\/p>\n

Notably, when Breitbart produced a list<\/span><\/a> of \u201c20 lies\u201d in Clinton\u2019s speech on the \u201calt-right,\u201d it made no effort to distance itself from the movement or suggest that she erred in linking it to the website and its former leader.<\/p>\n

When Bannon was hired by Trump\u2019s presidential campaign, white nationalists cheered<\/span><\/a>. When his move to the White House was announced, they were ecstatic<\/span><\/a>.<\/p>\n

Bannon was very happy to be associated with the movement when it was boosting Breitbart\u2019s traffic, influence, and revenue. But now things have changed, as companies and ad vendors have pulled their advertising<\/span><\/a> from the site in huge numbers due to its association with racism and misogyny.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

We suppose the gullible and those who willfully remain uninformed will continue to buy anything the\u00a0conservative movement and republican \u00a0party attempts to convince them is the “real<\/em>” truth.<\/p>\n
