{"id":360,"date":"2017-03-08T17:48:47","date_gmt":"2017-03-08T22:48:47","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/rationalnationusa.com\/blog\/?p=360"},"modified":"2017-03-08T17:48:47","modified_gmt":"2017-03-08T22:48:47","slug":"trump-quietly-installing-hundreds-of-officials-across-the-federal-bureaucracy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/rationalnationusa.com\/blog\/archives\/360","title":{"rendered":"Trump Quietly Installing Hundreds of Officials Across the Federal Bureaucracy&#8230;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>President Trump\u00a0may be slow in filling government positions requiring senate confirmation but such has not been the case for more obscure but\u00a0still important jobs spreading across the\u00a0federal bureaucracy\u00a0.<\/p>\n<p>Since taking office Trump has filled more than 400 of the approximate \u00a0520 staffers the administration said it was hiring for &#8220;beachhead&#8221; jobs.<\/p>\n<p>You likely recall the promise Trump made to &#8220;drain the swamp&#8221; if he was elected president.\u00a0 We&#8217;re guessing most folks\u00a0probably consider &#8220;draining the swamp&#8221; means getting rid of the &#8220;business as usual&#8221; type. We all applauded that one, right?<\/p>\n<p>Apparently President Trump views how\u00a0to &#8220;drain the swamp&#8221; a bit differently than most.\u00a0So far many of\u00a0the 400 plus beachhead jobs he has filled are occupied by, well, more of the same. In other words by the very swamp rats he pledged to get rid of when he &#8220;drained the swamp&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s a quick look provided by <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/ProPublica\">PRO PUBLICA<\/a>.<\/strong><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>We have obtained a list of more than 400 Trump administration hires, including dozens of lobbyists and some from far-right media.<\/p>\n<p>A Trump campaign aide who argues that Democrats committed \u201cethnic cleansing\u201d in a plot to \u201cliquidate\u201d the white working class. A former reality show contestant whose study of societal collapse inspired him to invent a bow-and-arrow-<em>cum<\/em>-survivalist multi-tool. A pair of healthcare industry lobbyists. A lobbyist for defense contractors. An \u201cevangelist\u201d and lobbyist for Palantir, the Silicon Valley company with close ties to intelligence agencies. And a New Hampshire Trump supporter who has only recently graduated from high school.<\/p>\n<p>These are some of the people the Trump administration has hired for positions across the federal government, according to documents received by ProPublica through public-records requests.<\/p>\n<p>While President Trump has <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2017\/02\/25\/politics\/donald-trump-cabinet-vacancies\/\"><u><span style=\"color: #0066cc;\">not moved<\/span><\/u><\/a> to fill <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/graphics\/politics\/trump-administration-appointee-tracker\/database\/\"><u><span style=\"color: #0066cc;\">many jobs<\/span><\/u><\/a> that require Senate confirmation, he has quietly installed hundreds of officials to serve as his eyes and ears at every major federal agency, from the Pentagon to the Department of Interior.<\/p>\n<p>Unlike appointees exposed to the scrutiny of the Senate, members of these so-called \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.politico.com\/blogs\/donald-trump-administration\/2017\/01\/beachhead-teams-agenda-inauguration-day-233774\"><u><span style=\"color: #0066cc;\">beachhead teams<\/span><\/u><\/a>\u201d have operated largely in the shadows, with the White House declining to publicly reveal their identities.<\/p>\n<p>While some names have previously dribbled out in the press, <a href=\"https:\/\/projects.propublica.org\/graphics\/beachhead\"><u><span style=\"color: #0066cc;\">we are publishing a list of more than 400 hires<\/span><\/u><\/a>, providing the most complete accounting so far of who Trump has brought into the federal government.<\/p>\n<p>The White House <a href=\"http:\/\/www.politico.com\/blogs\/donald-trump-administration\/2017\/01\/beachhead-teams-agenda-inauguration-day-233774\"><u><span style=\"color: #0066cc;\">said<\/span><\/u><\/a> in January that around 520 staffers were being hired for the beachhead teams.<\/p>\n<p>Skip<\/p>\n<p>The list is striking for how many former lobbyists it contains: We found at least 36, spanning industries from health insurance and pharmaceuticals to construction, energy and finance. Many of them lobbied in the same areas that are regulated by the agencies they have now joined.<\/p>\n<div class=\"callout\">\n<p>That figure is almost certainly an undercount since we only included those who formally registered as lobbyists, a process <a href=\"https:\/\/sunlightfoundation.com\/2016\/04\/19\/what-is-shadow-lobbying-how-influence-peddlers-shape-policy-in-the-dark\/\"><u><span style=\"color: #0066cc;\">increasingly avoided<\/span><\/u><\/a> by many in Washington.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>During the campaign, Trump said he would have \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.propublica.org\/article\/trump-before-would-have-no-problem-banning-lobbyists-trump-now-youre-hired\"><u><span style=\"color: #0066cc;\">no problem<\/span><\/u><\/a>\u201d banning lobbyists from his administration. But they have nonetheless ended up in senior roles, aided by Trump\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.propublica.org\/article\/how-the-trump-administration-may-be-skirting-its-own-ethics-rules\"><u><span style=\"color: #0066cc;\">weakening of Obama-era ethics<\/span><\/u><\/a> rules that <a href=\"http:\/\/www.politico.com\/story\/2015\/12\/barack-obama-revolving-door-lobbying-217042\"><u><span style=\"color: #0066cc;\">modestly limited<\/span><\/u><\/a> lobbyists\u2019 role in government.<\/p>\n<p>The White House didn\u2019t respond to requests for comment.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf the public and Senate is in the dark about a team created without a Senate confirmation process, no one will be permitted to shed light on who is hopelessly conflicted or who is obviously unqualified \u2014 and who is both,\u201d said <a href=\"http:\/\/cepr.net\/about-us\/staff\/jeff-hauser-executive-director-of-the-revolving-door-project\"><u><span style=\"color: #0066cc;\">Jeff Hauser<\/span><\/u><\/a>, director of the Revolving Door Project at the Center for Economic and Policy Research.<\/p>\n<p>The beachhead team members are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chcoc.gov\/content\/temporary-transition-schedule-c-authority-and-temporary-transition-senior-executive-service\"><u><span style=\"color: #0066cc;\">temporary<\/span><\/u><\/a> employees serving for stints of four to eight months, but many are expected to move into permanent jobs. The Trump administration\u2019s model is based on <a href=\"http:\/\/nbcpolitics.nbcnews.com\/_news\/2012\/11\/19\/15264192-inside-the-romney-readiness-project-the-ambitious-plans-for-an-unrealized-administration?lite\"><u><span style=\"color: #0066cc;\">plans<\/span><\/u><\/a> developed but never used by the unsuccessful presidential campaign of Mitt Romney.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe beachhead teams involve people with considerable authority over the federal government,\u201d said Max Stier, the CEO of the Partnership for Public Service, a nonpartisan group that <a href=\"http:\/\/presidentialtransition.org\/ready-to-govern\/index.php\"><u><span style=\"color: #0066cc;\">advises<\/span><\/u><\/a> presidential candidates on smooth transitions. \u201cWe need clarity about what they\u2019re doing and what their role is going to be.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Skip<\/p>\n<p>The new list of names was provided to us by the Office of Personnel Management, the government\u2019s human resources agency. We received additional names from other federal agencies in response to Freedom of Information Act requests. At least a few people on the list have changed agencies or left the administration, including, for example, the young Department of Housing and Urban Development staffer who was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2017\/02\/16\/us\/politics\/shermichael-singleton-housing-urban-development.html\"><u><span style=\"color: #0066cc;\">fired<\/span><\/u><\/a> after his anti-Trump writings during the campaign came to light.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>More <a href=\"https:\/\/www.propublica.org\/article\/meet-hundreds-of-officials-trump-has-quietly-installed-across-government\"><strong><em>BELOW THE FOLD.<\/em><\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Appears as though the &#8220;drain the swamp&#8221; thing was just another Trump falsehood.
