Something there is that doesn’t love a wall,<\/em><\/div>\n
That sends the frozen-ground-swell under it,<\/em><\/div>\n
And spills the upper boulders in the sun;<\/em><\/div>\n
And makes gaps even two can pass abreast.<\/em><\/div>\n
The work of hunters is another thing:<\/em><\/div>\n
I have come after them and made repair<\/em><\/div>\n
Where they have left not one stone on a stone,<\/em><\/div>\n
But they would have the rabbit out of hiding,<\/em><\/div>\n
To please the yelping dogs. The gaps I mean,<\/em><\/div>\n
No one has seen them made or heard them made,<\/em><\/div>\n
But at spring mending-time we find them there.<\/em><\/div>\n
I let my neighbour know beyond the hill;<\/em><\/div>\n
And on a day we meet to walk the line<\/em><\/div>\n
And set the wall between us once again.<\/em><\/div>\n
We keep the wall between us as we go.<\/em><\/div>\n
To each the boulders that have fallen to each.<\/em><\/div>\n
And some are loaves and some so nearly balls<\/em><\/div>\n
We have to use a spell to make them balance:<\/em><\/div>\n
“Stay where you are until our backs are turned!”<\/em><\/div>\n
We wear our fingers rough with handling them.<\/em><\/div>\n
Oh, just another kind of out-door game,<\/em><\/div>\n
One on a side. It comes to little more:<\/em><\/div>\n
There where it is we do not need the wall:<\/em><\/div>\n
He is all pine and I am apple orchard.<\/em><\/div>\n
My apple trees will never get across<\/em><\/div>\n
And eat the cones under his pines, I tell him.<\/em><\/div>\n
He only says, “Good fences make good neighbours.”<\/em><\/div>\n
Spring is the mischief in me, and I wonder<\/em><\/div>\n
If I could put a notion in his head:<\/em><\/div>\n
“Why<\/strong> do they make good neighbours? Isn’t it<\/em><\/div>\n
Where there are cows? But here there are no cows.<\/em><\/div>\n
Before I built a wall I’d ask to know<\/em><\/div>\n
What I was walling in or walling out,<\/em><\/div>\n
And to whom I was like to give offence.<\/em><\/div>\n
Something there is that doesn’t love a wall,<\/em><\/div>\n
That wants it down.” I could say “Elves” to him,<\/em><\/div>\n
But it’s not elves exactly, and I’d rather<\/em><\/div>\n
He said it for himself. I see him there<\/em><\/div>\n
Bringing a stone grasped firmly by the top<\/em><\/div>\n
In each hand, like an old-stone savage armed.<\/em><\/div>\n
He moves in darkness as it seems to me,<\/em><\/div>\n
Not of woods only and the shade of trees.<\/em><\/div>\n
He will not go behind his father’s saying,<\/em><\/div>\n
And he likes having thought of it so well<\/em><\/div>\n
He says again, “Good fences make good neighbours.”<\/em><\/div>\n
