{"id":521,"date":"2017-03-26T17:42:22","date_gmt":"2017-03-26T22:42:22","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/rationalnationusa.com\/blog\/?p=521"},"modified":"2017-03-26T17:44:12","modified_gmt":"2017-03-26T22:44:12","slug":"mending-wall","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/rationalnationusa.com\/blog\/archives\/521","title":{"rendered":"Mending Wall"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<div><em>Something there is that doesn&#8217;t love a wall,<\/em><\/div>\n<div><em>That sends the frozen-ground-swell under it,<\/em><\/div>\n<div><em>And spills the upper boulders in the sun;<\/em><\/div>\n<div><em>And makes gaps even two can pass abreast.<\/em><\/div>\n<div><em>The work of hunters is another thing:<\/em><\/div>\n<div><em>I have come after them and made repair<\/em><\/div>\n<div><em>Where they have left not one stone on a stone,<\/em><\/div>\n<div><em>But they would have the rabbit out of hiding,<\/em><\/div>\n<div><em>To please the yelping dogs. The gaps I mean,<\/em><\/div>\n<div><em>No one has seen them made or heard them made,<\/em><\/div>\n<div><em>But at spring mending-time we find them there.<\/em><\/div>\n<div><em>I let my neighbour know beyond the hill;<\/em><\/div>\n<div><em>And on a day we meet to walk the line<\/em><\/div>\n<div><em>And set the wall between us once again.<\/em><\/div>\n<div><em>We keep the wall between us as we go.<\/em><\/div>\n<div><em>To each the boulders that have fallen to each.<\/em><\/div>\n<div><em>And some are loaves and some so nearly balls<\/em><\/div>\n<div><em>We have to use a spell to make them balance:<\/em><\/div>\n<div><em>&#8220;Stay where you are until our backs are turned!&#8221;<\/em><\/div>\n<div><em>We wear our fingers rough with handling them.<\/em><\/div>\n<div><em>Oh, just another kind of out-door game,<\/em><\/div>\n<div><em>One on a side. It comes to little more:<\/em><\/div>\n<div><em>There where it is we do not need the wall:<\/em><\/div>\n<div><em>He is all pine and I am apple orchard.<\/em><\/div>\n<div><em>My apple trees will never get across<\/em><\/div>\n<div><em>And eat the cones under his pines, I tell him.<\/em><\/div>\n<div><em>He only says, &#8220;Good fences make good neighbours.&#8221;<\/em><\/div>\n<div><em>Spring is the mischief in me, and I wonder<\/em><\/div>\n<div><em>If I could put a notion in his head:<\/em><\/div>\n<div><em>&#8220;<strong>Why<\/strong> do they make good neighbours? Isn&#8217;t it<\/em><\/div>\n<div><em>Where there are cows? But here there are no cows.<\/em><\/div>\n<div><em>Before I built a wall I&#8217;d ask to know<\/em><\/div>\n<div><em>What I was walling in or walling out,<\/em><\/div>\n<div><em>And to whom I was like to give offence.<\/em><\/div>\n<div><em>Something there is that doesn&#8217;t love a wall,<\/em><\/div>\n<div><em>That wants it down.&#8221; I could say &#8220;Elves&#8221; to him,<\/em><\/div>\n<div><em>But it&#8217;s not elves exactly, and I&#8217;d rather<\/em><\/div>\n<div><em>He said it for himself.
